Understanding Private Label

What is Private Label Clothing Manufacturing?

Private label manufacturing allows brands to develop and sell apparel under their own brand name without operating production facilities. Working with a private label clothing manufacturer gives you complete ownership of designs, branding, and market positioning while leveraging established manufacturing expertise.

Private Label vs. White Label

Private Label Manufacturing

Custom designs developed exclusively for your brand. You own the patterns, specifications, and can’t be replicated for other buyers. Higher development investment but stronger brand differentiation.

White Label / OEM Manufacturing

Existing factory designs produced with your branding. Lower development costs and faster time-to-market, but less product differentiation. Ideal for basics and commodity items. Learn more about OEM apparel manufacturing.

Private Label FAQ

Private Label Manufacturing Questions

Answers to common questions about private label clothing production with verified manufacturers.

What is the minimum order quantity for private label production?
Typical MOQs start from 500 units per style/color for established patterns. Custom design development may require higher minimums (1,000+) to justify sampling and setup costs. Some manufacturers offer lower MOQs for first orders to help brands test the market before scaling.
Total timeline ranges from 10-16 weeks: design consultation and tech pack (1-2 weeks), fabric selection and sampling (3-6 weeks), pre-production approval (1-2 weeks), bulk production (4-8 weeks), and QC/shipment (1-2 weeks). Rush timelines may be possible for simpler products.
Both options are available. Full-package production includes fabric sourcing through the manufacturer’s supply chain. Alternatively, you can supply your own fabric (CMT arrangement)—though this requires managing separate logistics. Most buyers prefer full-package for simplicity.
You own all custom patterns, specifications, and designs developed for your private label production. Unlike OEM where factory owns the design, private label development is exclusive to your brand—manufacturers cannot produce identical items for other buyers.
Full branding customization includes woven labels (main and size), printed care/content labels, hangtags and price tickets, branded packaging (polybags, boxes, tissue), and custom trims (buttons, zippers with pulls). All elements feature your brand—no factory branding appears.
Most private label development requires 2-3 sample rounds: proto sample (initial fit and construction), revised sample (incorporating feedback), and pre-production sample (final approval). Complex designs or demanding fit requirements may require additional rounds.
Quality standards are defined based on your requirements. We implement AQL (Acceptable Quality Level) inspection protocols—typically AQL 2.5 for major defects and 4.0 for minor. Specific testing (shrinkage, colorfastness, seam strength) can be incorporated as needed.
Some manufacturers offer multi-category capabilities (e.g., both knits and wovens). However, for optimal quality, we often recommend category-specific specialists. TexXport can coordinate across multiple manufacturers while you maintain a single point of contact.
